Chapter 18 - Wind Up

The next day they took a break from their covert activities in the secret laboratory to go hoverboarding again. There was a stiff breeze in the air as they exited Anna’s house with their boards tucked under their arms, and climbed into the bubble car they had requested several minutes earlier.

“This wind gives me an idea,” said Anna mysteriously, but despite Harry’s instance, she refused to let on.

“It’s unkind to lead people on that way,” Harry scolded her.

“I expect you’re right, but I want you to enjoy the surprise,” she countered, and punched in a new destination on the bubble car’s controls.

Harry reclined in the big seat and watched the world flash past. It was a beautiful place, the way town and country seemed to blend together as one, although he found the lack of proper open countryside a little claustrophobic.

The trip lasted only a few minutes, ending with their arrival at a large open red-tinted grassy area, which contrasted significantly with the rest of the land. Given Harry’s thoughts a few moments earlier he considered it quite a coincidence. As they stepped out of the bubble car, in the distance he could vaguely make out small sail-like triangles moving smoothly over the flat surface, punctuated by the occasional little lift into the air. Harry had his suspicions about what they were, but kept his thoughts to himself.

Anna led the way into a large white building, where there were the usual lockers, into which they placed their now redundant hoverboards and helmets. They passed into another room, which had large open double doors to the outside. Anna spoke briefly to a friendly woman, who disappeared through another set of large doors, only to return shortly after with a colleague, each guiding a hoverboard fitted with a mast and sail. It was as Harry had suspected.

Anna grinned at him. “Ever been windsurfing?” she asked.

“I can’t say I have,” answered Harry. While he liked the idea of giving the hoverboard windsurfing a go, he felt somewhat apprehensive about falling off.

He needn’t have fretted though. The nice woman provided some brief instructions on how to control the board by angling the sail in the right direction. Harry felt more confident with the harness fitted round his waist securing him to his hover-sail, he now knew the correct term, and that the board was in safe mode. This ensured while he the windsurfer could not turn as sharply as he might wish, neither would he fall off, as both the board and the mast would always remain upright, and so prevent him from falling. Naturally Anna’s hover-sail had its safe mode disabled, which she demonstrated in typical fashion, by using what little breeze there was inside to glide gracefully straight out through the double doors.

Tentatively Harry pushed his board outside. With the help of a guiding hand from the friendly woman he stepped on, pulled the boom in towards him, and instantly the strong breeze caught the sail and whisked him away.
